Medicare plan types, explained simply

A quick overview. Sid can explain which types fit your situation.

Original Medicare (Parts A and B)

Run by the federal government. Part A covers hospital stays; Part B covers doctor visits and outpatient care. You can see any doctor who accepts Medicare.

Medicare Advantage (Part C)

Plans from Medicare-approved private insurance companies that combine Parts A and B, and often Part D. Many include extra benefits, and most use provider networks.

Prescription drug plans (Part D)

Help pay for prescription medicines. Each plan has its own list of covered drugs, so it's worth checking yours every year.

Medicare Supplement (Medigap)

Works alongside Original Medicare to help pay costs like deductibles and coinsurance. Sold by private insurance companies.

Special Needs Plans

Medicare Advantage plans for people with specific needs, such as those with both Medicare and Medi-Cal or Medicaid (D-SNPs) or certain chronic conditions.
